Logging in

When you start Smart, you will see the login window. (When you start Smart for the first time after installation, or change database, you are asked for additional information - see below.)

If Smart is already running and the previous user has logged out, press this button  on the Main Menu to open the login window.

To enter the Operator name you need only enter your initials or the first few letters of your user name.

Enter your Password in full. If this is a demonstration or evaluation system, a password of a or admin will probably suffice.

If you have multiple Control Rooms or Divisions set up you can select from the next two lines (otherwise the Control Room and Division fields are hidden). Depending on your system configuration the terms 'Control Room' and 'Division' may be replaced by other terms.

Depending on your access configuration you may be able to see but not change the name of a Control Room or Division in this window. This means your access is limited to those.

If you have multiple control rooms or divisions in your system, and you have access to all of them, the choices here do not limit your access but simply provide default values wherever there is a choice to be made.

Multiple use of the same login may be prevented. Maintenance \Smart Setup \General Configuration \System \Prevent Multiple Logins. If this box is checked, and an operator logs in using a login which is already in use the operator is warned. If they continue with the login, the other operator's session is terminated.

If you accidentally configure your system so that there are no operators with Administrator access, Skorpion can provide a temporary password which will give you administrator access (you may have to arrange proof of identity).

Logging Out

When you have finished your work in Smart but want to leave Smart running, or if you are going to be away from Smart for more than a couple of minutes, you should log out. This will ensure that another user cannot operate Smart under your login and make you liable for their errors.

To log out, press this button at the top of the main Smart window:

Changing Database

Select \File \Change Database from the Main Menu to see the following window. This window also appears when you first start Smart after it is installed on your PC.

Server

If the Smart database is installed on the same PC as your copy of Smart you can use the word (local) as your server name. Otherwise, use the name of the PC on which the Smart database is installed. You may need to obtain this from your system administrator or Smart consultant.

If the name does not appear in the window or the drop-down list, simply key it in.

Database

Your database name is usually Smart. However you may also have a training or other database on your system. Your system administrator or Smart consultant will advise you of the names of any other databases.

If the name does not appear in the window or the drop-down list, simply key it in.

Network Type

Most networks require this to be set to TCP/IP.

  • If your database is installed on your local PC you may get better results by using Named Pipes
  • If you have a Novell network you may get better results by using IPX/SPX
  • If your network setup is complex you may get better results by using Multiprotocol

Preventing Database Change / Setting up a Training Database

You can optionally specify a database and server in the Windows shortcut (or command line) which starts Smart. This enables you to run two or more shortcuts on the same PC pointing to different databases (for example, when testing a new Smart release). When you start Smart this way, the 'Change Database' menu option is disabled, so users are prevented from choosing a different database.

Use the following syntax:

Server=(local) Database=Smart
you can replace (local) and Smart with appropriate settings.
There must be no space next to the = sign, and there must be at least one space (or a comma) between the two settings. Either setting can be omitted.

e.g. from the command prompt you could enter

c:\smart3> smart Service=Myserver Database=SmartTraining

Setting up a training database

An instance of SMART can be started with its own .ini file. This allows a 'practice' version of Smart to be set up with its own settings, e.g. database and screen settings. The main benefit is that the 'practice' version can have different screen colours to the 'real' version, avoiding operator confusion.  To use, start Smart with the following command line (the text in bold is case sensitive and spaces are not permitted).

Smart INIFile=Inifilename

where inifilename is the file to use.

NB this can be used in conjunction with the Database= and Server= command line options to prevent operators changing to a different server or database.
